Crowdfunder appeal, open now
£2,085 of £5,000 42%

Closes 9 September 2026 at 9:59am. Every pledge made before then goes to the hub, whether or not we hit the target.

Donations are handled by Crowdfunder, not by this website. Match funding from the Communities Fund has already added £1,990 on top of what people have given.

The Fresh Start Community Hub supports people who have made the courageous decision to change their lives and begin rebuilding their future. Many of the people we work alongside are recovering from addiction, leaving prison, moving into supported accommodation, experiencing homelessness or trying to reconnect with their community.

Taking the first step towards change is incredibly difficult. Recovery is not only about stopping harmful behaviours. It is also about rebuilding confidence, creating stability, developing new skills, managing everyday responsibilities and feeling part of a community again.

Many people arrive at our services with very little. Some do not have suitable clothing, toiletries, towels, food or other everyday essentials. These may seem like small things, but having clean clothes, personal hygiene products and a hot meal can make a real difference to someone's dignity, confidence and wellbeing.

What the hub provides

A welcoming, non-judgemental community pop-up service. Practical essentials alongside recovery, financial wellbeing and community support.

  • Toiletries and personal hygiene products
  • Towels and essential personal items
  • Clothing, trainers, socks, underwear and pyjamas
  • Hot meals, food and refreshments
  • Weekly budgeting and money-management support
  • Recovery and wellbeing groups
  • Peer support from people with lived experience
  • Volunteering and community involvement opportunities
  • Life-skills, education and employment support
  • Signposting to housing, benefits, debt, recovery and specialist services
  • A safe place for people to talk, connect and feel valued
  • A town-centre pop-up stall where people can access information and support

We already provide meals for groups twice a week. Those shared meals are about much more than food. They give people a chance to sit together, talk, build trust and feel like they belong somewhere.

Weekly money support

The hub runs a weekly drop-in session on practical budgeting and money management. No appointment, no complicated registration form, just turn up.

Many of the people we support are rebuilding their lives on limited incomes. They may be managing benefits, dealing with unpaid bills, preparing to move into accommodation or learning to run a household budget on their own for the first time.

People get help to

  • Understand their income and spending
  • Prioritise rent, utilities, food and other essential costs
  • Create realistic weekly or monthly budgets
  • Plan for bills and household expenses
  • Identify unnecessary spending
  • Recognise the risks of high-cost or crisis borrowing
  • Develop safer financial habits
  • Prepare for independent living
  • Access specialist debt, benefits, housing and employment support

Support runs as small-group discussions and one-to-one guidance, and people are encouraged to come back so they can review their budget as their circumstances change. Where someone needs specialist help, we connect them with trusted debt, benefits, housing and employment services.

Better money management helps prevent missed essential payments, reduces financial anxiety, protects someone's accommodation and supports independent living and lasting recovery.

People can reach the sessions through Reflections Yorkshire CIC, Phoenix Recovery Hub, supported accommodation providers, community referrals, prison-release pathways, outreach, or by walking up to the town-centre pop-up stall.

Why this matters

People rebuilding their lives often face several problems at once: addiction, trauma, homelessness, financial hardship, poor mental health, family breakdown, or the difficulty of returning to the community after prison. Without the right support, that lot together becomes overwhelming very quickly.

We believe nobody should be defined by their past. With the right support, encouragement and opportunities, people can change their lives and become valued members of their communities.

Our approach is person-centred and built on dignity, compassion and lived experience. Progress looks different for everyone. Some people need clothing and toiletries. Others need a meal, a conversation, budgeting help, or the confidence to join a group.

This is not simply about handing out towels and trainers. Practical support opens the door. Someone may first come because they need a pair of trainers, and once they feel welcomed and safe they start talking about everything else that is going on. That conversation is what leads to recovery groups, housing advice, benefits guidance, volunteering, education or a route back into work.

Phoenix Recovery Hub

We support people to build recovery, connection and hope in their own community, and we signpost to every recovery, mental health, housing and practical service across Doncaster.

About Phoenix

Both teams understand addiction and recovery professionally and personally. Lived experience is the strongest thing we have. It lets us talk to people honestly, challenge them when they need it, and show from real experience that change is possible. We do not just tell people how to change their lives. We walk alongside them while they do it.

Where the money goes

The £5,000 target, line by line. Every penny goes into delivering practical, recovery and money support to people rebuilding their lives.

  • £1,800 Project coordinator and facilitator costs Weekly drop-in sessions, budgeting and money-management support, participant follow-up and partnership coordination.
  • £700 Sessional peer-support workers Paid hours for workers with lived experience of addiction and recovery.
  • £600 Toiletries, hygiene packs and clothing The everyday essentials people arrive without.
  • £450 Food and refreshments The shared meals that run twice a week.
  • £450 Town-centre pop-up stall Getting the hub out to people who would never walk into a building.
  • £300 Venue hire
  • £250 Budgeting, recovery and wellbeing materials
  • £200 Volunteer travel and safeguarding training
  • £150 Storage and transport
  • £100 Insurance, administration and monitoring

Paying for coordination is what keeps the hub safe, consistent and properly run, and it pays trained peer-support workers for their time rather than relying on goodwill. Where we can, we work with local shops, supermarkets and businesses to get goods donated so the funding stretches further.

Stretch target

£10,000

Anything above £5,000 pays for more weekly outreach and money-support sessions across Doncaster and South Yorkshire, plus more materials, food, toiletries, clothing, venue hire, volunteer expenses and follow-up support. It means reaching people who are blocked by money, transport or plain lack of confidence.

How you can help

Your donation could give someone clean clothing, hygiene products, a hot meal, budgeting resources or a place on a weekly drop-in session. Businesses and individuals can help without giving money too.

  • Donate goods. Clothing, trainers, socks, underwear, pyjamas, towels, toiletries and food.
  • Offer a collection point. A box in your shop, office or gym reception.
  • Volunteer. At a session, on the pop-up stall, or with the meals.
  • Share this page. It costs nothing and puts the hub in front of someone new.
